Corrosive Substance Packaging

UN Approved Packaging for Corrosive Substances.

Transporting corrosive substances requires packaging that is suitable for the substance and the applicable dangerous goods regulations. Our range of UN approved corrosive packaging includes combination and single packagings designed for the transport of compatible Class 8 corrosive substances.

Choose from 4G, 4GV and 4DV outer packagings, suitable for use with compatible glass, plastic or metal inner packagings, or select UN approved single packaging such as plastic, steel and composite drums and jerricans.

Whether you are transporting corrosive chemicals, laboratory substances or hazardous waste, selecting the correct UN packaging for corrosive substances is essential. Shippers must refer to the relevant mode of transport regulations, identify the UN Number, refer to the applicable packing instruction and any special provisions to identify permitted packaging, but shippers must also ensure the substance is compatible with the packaging material before transporting the corrosive.

Corrosive Packaging Types

Combination Packaging

Combination packaging consists of one or more inner packagings placed inside a UN approved outer packaging. This can provide a flexible solution when corrosive substances need to be transported in smaller containers.

Our available options include:

  • Glass bottles in 4G, 4GV or 4DV outer packaging
  • Plastic inner packagings in 4G, 4GV or 4DV outer packaging
  • Metal inner packagings in 4G, 4GV or 4DV outer packaging

Metal inner packagings must be suitable for the substance being transported and, where applicable, must be corrosion resistant or provided with protection against corrosion.

Single Packaging

Single packagings are UN approved and designed to contain the dangerous goods directly without an outer packaging.

Our range suitable for compatible corrosive substances includes:

UN Plastic Jerricans

Durable UN approved plastic jerricans suitable for compatible corrosive liquids. HDPE construction can provide good chemical resistance, but compatibility with the specific substance must always be confirmed.

UN Plastic Drums

UN approved plastic drums available in a range of capacities for compatible corrosive substances and hazardous materials.

UN Steel Drums & Steel Jerricans

Robust UN approved steel drums and jerricans for suitable corrosive substances. Metal packaging must be corrosion resistant or have appropriate protection against corrosion where required by the applicable regulations.

Composite Drums

UN approved composite drums combining different packaging materials to provide a suitable solution for particular dangerous goods applications.

Choosing Packaging for Corrosive Substances

The correct packaging depends on more than simply identifying a substance as corrosive.

Before selecting your packaging, check:

  1. UN Number
Identify the specific substance or mixture being transported.
  2. Packing Group
Class 8 substances may be assigned to Packing Group I, II or III according to their degree of danger.
  3. Physical State
Determine whether the substance is a liquid or solid.
  4. Packing Instruction
DG regulations assigns packing instructions to individual entries in the Dangerous Goods List. These instructions determine which packaging types are permitted.
  5. Packaging Compatibility The packaging material must be suitable for the substance. Particular care is required with corrosive materials because they can react with the packaging materials and closures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Corrosive packaging is UN approved packaging designed for the transport of dangerous goods including compatible Class 8 dangerous goods. The correct packaging depends on the UN number, Packing Group, applicable packing instruction and substance compatibility with permitted packaging material.

Depending on the substance and applicable packing instruction, corrosive substances may be transported using combination packaging, such as glass, plastic or metal inners inside 4G, 4GV or 4DV outer packaging, or suitable single packaging, including plastic jerricans, plastic drums, steel drums, steel jerricans and composite drums. It is the shipper’s responsibility to check compatibility of substance and packaging material.

Potentially, yes. However, the packaging must be suitable for the specific substance and permitted by the applicable dangerous goods regulations. Chemical compatibility should always be confirmed before transport.

Some corrosive substances can be transported in steel packaging where permitted by the applicable packing instruction. Metal packaging must be corrosion resistant or have appropriate protection against corrosion where required. It is the shipper’s responsibility to check compatibility of substance and packaging material.

Class 8 corrosive substances may be assigned to Packing Group I, II or III, depending on the degree of danger. The Packing Group is determined from the substance’s classification and is important when selecting the correct packaging.

Both are fibreboard combination packagings, but 4GV packaging provides greater flexibility in the types of inner packagings that can be used as shippers can choose their preferred inner types, subject to the conditions of the relevant approval and assembly instructions. 4G boxes have been tested with specific inner types and can only be used with those inner types.
