Amendment to the example of marking for new packagings in 6.1.3.10 Approved

28 January 2026 | Industry News & Regs

A recent proposal to amend 6.1.3.10 of the Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Model Regulations has been approved.

An expert from the republic of Korea submitted a paper regarding the current example given in 6.1.3.10 Examples for marking NEW packagings; “4HW/Y136/S/98/NL/VL826”.

The explanation given is that the packaging code 4HW is not a valid/complete code so is an incorrect example. The only existing packaging codes for plastic boxes are 4H1 or 4H2 (6.1.4.13), therefore in this example the packaging code displayed should be “4H2W/Y136/S/98/NL/VL826”.

The oversight was resulting in a number of manufacturers applying specification markings beginning with 4HW to their packagings.

This proposal to update the example UN specification mark was approved and amends will be published in June 2027 Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods, Model regulations.
Adoption into modal regulations will be from January 2029.
