Celebrating 45 Years: The Story Behind Air Sea Containers Ltd

12 March 2026 | General News

In 2026, Air Sea Containers Ltd proudly celebrates 45 years in business. While the company was formally established in March 1981, the story behind the business stretches back even further to 1946. All beginning with a partnership built on hard work, innovation and adapting to the changing needs of industry.

Looking back over nearly eight decades of history reveals how the company evolved from drum reconditioning to becoming a trusted supplier of dangerous goods packaging used worldwide.

The Early Foundations: 1946–1970

The story begins in 1946, when Herbert Staniford and William Gaskell founded Staniford & Gaskell Ltd, a drums reconditioning business based on New Chester Road in Rock Ferry, North West England. At the time, industries relied heavily on wooden barrels moving onto alloy then steel drums for storing and transporting materials.

By 1949, after several years of strong growth, the business purchased its first vehicle, a Fordson Thames lorry, enabling it to expand its operations and reach more customers.

A new generation joined the business in 1964, when Donald Staniford, Herbert’s 25-year-old son, entered the company. That same year, William Gaskell retired and the Herbert bought Williams share of the business.

In 1969, the company was renamed Staniford (Rock Ferry) Ltd, and Donald purchased 50% of the business, beginning his leadership journey.

Two years later, in 1971, Herbert Staniford retired, leaving his share of the business to his five children, while in 1972, Donald’s brother Douglas Staniford joined the company and took responsibility for developing Staniford’s first computer system.

The Birth of Air Sea Containers Ltd: 1981

A fundamental moment came in 1981 when new legislation governing the transport of dangerous goods created a need for specialised compliant packaging.

Recognising the opportunity, Donald Staniford founded Air Sea Containers Ltd, establishing a company dedicated to providing packaging solutions that met the emerging international regulations for hazardous materials transport.

In those early days, the company developed smaller packaging solutions for samples being transported from offshore rigs to onshore, a niche requirement that demonstrated the company’s ability to respond quickly to industry needs.

Innovation and Industry Recognition: Late 1980’s–1990’s

Innovation continued throughout the late 1980s. In 1988, the company developed a small 4G packaging range for the petrochemical industry, based on heavy-duty tinplate drums. That same year, the company achieved its first UN approval code (GB\0582), marking an important milestone in its dangerous goods packaging credentials.

During the early 1990s, the petrochemical range expanded to include single packagings and inner packagings, allowing customers greater flexibility when shipping hazardous materials.

As the company’s reputation grew within the dangerous goods sector, international partnerships followed. By 1991, agents had been established in Italy, the USA, Germany, South Africa, Portugal and Spain, extending the company’s reach across global markets.

1994 Donald’s daughter Katharine Staniford joined the company to learn the business and develop the ISO 9000 Quality Management System. Katharine went on to update the company’s technology, moving away from a paper-based system and introduced computerised operations.

Innovation also expanded into the biomedical sector. In 1994, the company developed its first UN approved packaging for Infectious Substance Category A, Biopack 1. This was followed by further growth in biomedical packaging and thermal control solutions throughout the 1990s.

To support continued expansion, a new warehouse facility was built in Birkenhead in 1997, known as Staniford Building.

By 1998, the company’s global presence continued to grow with agents established in France, Norway, Singapore, Thailand and UAE.

Expanding Product Ranges: 2000’s

In the early 2000s, the company expanded its biomedical packaging offering further, with the development of Infectious Substance Category B packaging, which led into the creation of a qualified thermal control product range.

The company also continued to invest in its infrastructure. In 2010, the Staniford Building warehouse was remodelled to incorporate office space, allowing operations and administration to work side-by-side in a purpose-built facility. That same year, the 4GV packaging range was redeveloped to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements.

Responding to New Transport Challenges: 2010’s

As technology evolved, so too did dangerous goods regulations. In 2013, Air Sea Containers developed its lithium battery packaging range, responding to the rapid growth of lithium powered devices and the associated safety requirements.

Sustainability also became a growing focus across industries. In 2016, the company introduced its Eco Range, including the launch of ECO 4GV packaging, designed to reduce environmental impact while maintaining UN compliance.

The company also expanded internationally with the opening of Air Sea USA in 2017, providing improved support and logistics for customers in the American market.

Continuing Innovation: 2020’s

Even after decades in business, innovation remains a core part of the company’s culture.

In 2023, a Limited Quantity capability tested range was introduced, giving customers additional compliant options for transporting smaller quantities of dangerous goods.

The following year marked another major milestone. In 2024, the company expanded beyond supplying specialist packaging by gaining ISO 17025 accreditation and opening an on-site UN Testing Laboratory. This development allows products to be performance tested in order to gain UN approval and capability tested directly within the UKAS accredited test lab, strengthening technical expertise and supporting customers wishing to produce their own compliant packaging solutions.

Success Through Partnerships

The success of Air Sea Containers Ltd over the past 45 years has been built not only on technical expertise and product innovation, but also on the dedication of its staff and the loyalty of its customers.

Many members of the team have been with the company for years, and in some cases decades, developing deep industry knowledge that enables them to support customers with confidence and professionalism. At the same time, long-standing relationships with customers who trust the company to deliver reliable, compliant packaging solutions have played a vital role in its continued growth. Together, the commitment of its people and the loyalty of its customers have created the strong foundation that has sustained the business for more than four decades.

 The Future Looks Bright

The journey from its origins as a local wooden barrel reconditioning operation in 1946 to a specialist dangerous goods packaging company serving customers around the world, has been one of adaptation, innovation and long-term relationships.

As Air Sea Containers Ltd celebrates 45 years since its founding in 1981, the company remains focused on the same values that have guided it for decades:

  • Trust
  • Excellence
  • Passion

The industry will continue to evolve, but the commitment to provide compliant dangerous goods packaging solutions and technical expertise to its customers remains unchanged.
