UN-approved Category A UN2814 & UN2900 infectious substance packaging and Category B UN3373 packaging

We have a range of UN packaging solutions for Class 6.2 Infectious Substances within Category A and Category B.

Our Category A infectious substance packaging is suitable for goods classified under UN2900 Infectious Substance affecting animal and UN2814 Infectious Substance, affecting humans), which must be packed under packing instruction 620 or 622.

Our Category B range (goods classified under UN3373 Biological Substances, Category B) includes a postal pack ideal for regular postal services. UN3373 must be packed under packing instruction 650 or 621.

All packing instructions can be found within the relevant dangerous goods regulations.

Shipping Infectious Substances

Our infectious substance packaging ranges from 50ml to 4 litres. For those with the need for temperature control, we have thermal control packaging that can be combined with our infectious substance packaging.

When shipping Category A and Category B infectious substances, packaging must display the relevant hazard labels for Class 6.2 – if you are unsure, please get in touch.

What is the difference between Category A and Category B infectious substances? 

When you are choosing packaging for infectious substances it is crucial to pick the right products for your items. This ensures the safe, responsible transportation of toxic or Infectious Substances.

Class 6.2 Infectious Substances are substances which are known or reasonably expected to contain pathogens. These include micro-organisms such as:

  • Bacteria
  • Virus
  • Parasites
  • Fungus

With infectious packaging, there are two main categories that you need to choose between for your deliveries.

Category A

Suitable for: 

  • Category A, UN 2814
  • Category A, UN 2900
  • Category A, UN 3549 (medical or clinical waste – solid)

Category A infectious substances are: infectious substances that if an exposure occurs when transported is capable of causing permanent disability, life-threatening or fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans or animals.

Examples are these include:

  • Nipah Virus
  • Ebola Virus 
  • Flexal Virus

Category B

Suitable for:

  • Category B UN 3373 Biological Substances
  • Category B UN 3291 Biomedical waste, clinical waste, medical waste and regulated medical waste.

Category B infectious substances which have a classification of UN 3373. Must be packed under packing instruction 650. Medical or clinical wastes containing Category B infectious substances must be assigned to UN 3291, packed under packing instruction 621.

Some common items that can be sent with Category B, UN 3373 packaging are:

  • COVID 19 Specimens
  • Blood Samples
  • Excreta
  • Tissues
  • Fluid
