Specimen Packaging Options for Category B Biological Samples

Our specimen packaging range is suitable for containing Biological Substance, Category B (UN3373) during transportation in accordance with IATA, DOT and IMDG Dangerous Goods Regulations. Materials classified as Category B can range from blood samples to swabs or tissue samples.

We offer the following packaging options for specimen shipping:

Postal Pack

Includes outer box, pre-printed UN3373 label, 95kPa BioBag-751, absorbent cushioning pouch, tamper-evident seal and a pre-printed QR code providing direct access to assembly instructions.

Bioshipper Kits

  • Bioshipper-1 our mid size kit includes outer box, a BioBag-751, absorbent cushioning pouch, tamper-evident seal, a pre-printed UN3373 label and QR code providing direct access to assembly instructions. It is capable of carrying up to 4 x BioBag-751s.
  • Bioshipper-2 is our larger kit that supports our largest BioBag-752, which can accommodate cryovial boxes or multiple single primary receptacles. Kit includes outer box, BioBag-752, 2x absorbent cushioning pouch, a tamper-evident seal, a pre-printed UN3373 label and QR code providing direct access to assembly instructions.

Biotransporter Temperature Control Packaging

  • Biotransporter 1: Temperature-controlled infectious substance packaging. Corrugated plastic outer case with EPE polystyrene foam liner insulation; designed for up to 5 kg dry ice (30–40 h thermal protection) and suitable for both Category A and Category B substances when used with appropriate secondary packaging such as Biotubes 330. Dry ice shipments are prepared in accordance with UN1845 requirements under IATA and DOT regulations.
  • Biotransporter 2: Temperature-controlled packaging. White plastic outer case with EPE polystyrene foam liner; holds a 1.5 L Biojar, up to 7 kg dry ice, and provides up to 130 h insulation. It is suitable for both Category A and Category B substances and supplied as a complete combination packaging, including 1 x 1.5 L Biojar (Code 490). Dry ice is handled in accordance with UN1845 and applicable DOT requirements.

Thermal Control Units

  • TC-100: Large capacity thermal control over-pack.
  • TC-565: Compact unit; maintains ≤ –20 °C with dry ice.
  • TC-650: Mid-size unit; carries approximately 4 kg dry ice and maintains ≤ –20 °C.

Specimen Bags

  • BioBag-751 (95 kPa specimen bag): Engineered to withstand 95 kPa pressure differentials and suitable for primary receptacles containing Category B specimens.
  • BioBag-752 (95 kPa specimen bag): Larger format specimen bag engineered to withstand 95 kPa, capable of carrying cryovial boxes or multiple individual primary containers.

UN3373 is a UN number assigned to Biological Substance, Category B. Substances covered include blood, tissue, swabs, urine, stools, and other diagnostic samples that may be infectious but do not pose a threat of life-threatening or permanently disabling disease. In the United States, UN3373 shipments are regulated by the Department of Transportation. Materials presenting a higher risk are classified as Category A under UN2814 (Infectious substance, affecting humans) or UN2900 (Infectious substance, affecting animals).

Yes. UN3373 Category B materials must be shipped using triple packaging, consisting of a primary receptacle, secondary packaging, and a rigid outer packaging, in accordance with Packing Instruction 650 as defined within IATA, DOT and IMDG Dangerous Goods Regulations.
