Proposal to revise paragraph 6.1.3.10 of the UN Dangerous Goods Model Regulations has approved.

28 January 2026 | Industry News & Regs

A proposal to revise paragraph 6.1.3.10 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Model Regulations has now been formally approved.

The amendment follows a submission from an expert representing the Republic of Korea, who identified an issue with the example currently provided in section 6.1.3.10, “Examples for marking NEW packagings.” The example shown “4HW/Y136/S/98/NL/VL826” includes a packaging code that is not valid under the existing regulations.

Specifically, 4HW is not a recognised as a complete packaging code. Under section 6.1.4.13, the only approved codes for plastic boxes are 4H1 and 4H2. As a result, it was proposed the example marking should correctly read “4H2W/Y136/S/98/NL/VL826.”

This error in the example has led to confusion within the industry, with some manufacturers applying UN specification markings beginning with 4HW to their packagings in good faith.

The proposal to correct the UN specification marking example has been accepted. The revised wording will appear in the June 2027 publication of the Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations. Incorporation into modal transport regulations are expected to take effect from January 2029.
