However, just because an incident hasn\u2019t occurred doesn\u2019t mean one won\u2019t. Relying on past success without adhering to regulations for shipping HazMat is a gamble that could have severe consequences. This is especially true when it comes to using UN certified packaging and ensuring it is correctly assembled.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is UN Certified Packaging?<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UN certified packaging is designed, tested, and approved to safely and compliantly transport hazardous goods across various modes of transport, including road, sea, rail and air. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In order for a package design to become UN Approved, the packaging itself has to pass rigorous tests specified in the relevant DG regulations. The manufacturer designing the packaging must adhere to strict guidelines regarding packaging specification and ensure the packaging passes a number of tests to prove it is capable of withstanding normal conditions of transport. These tests include; shocks, drops, stacking and pressure tests where applicable. UN certified packaging has been designed to mitigate this risk when used correctly, ensuring that:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hazardous materials are securely contained, reducing the risk of leaks or spills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The packaging can endure handling experienced in transportation and environmental stressors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Compliance with national and international transport regulations is maintained, preventing costly fines and legal issues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Choosing the Correct UN Certified Packaging<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Failing to use the correct UN certified packaging doesn\u2019t just put the contents at risk, it puts businesses, employees, the public and the environment in danger. Even if nothing bad has happened yet, it only takes one incident to cause a disaster.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is the shipper\u2019s responsibility to ensure that the relevant dangerous goods transport regulations are adhered to, and packaging requirements are met when transporting dangerous goods by air, sea, rail and road.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shippers must ensure that the articles or substances are correctly:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Identified<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Classified\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Packed\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marked<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Labelled\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And that limitations and special provisions are reviewed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once the shipper has identified their dangerous goods, they can then refer to the correct Packing Instruction (PI) to see; compatibility requirements, what packaging is permitted, quantity limits and any additional packaging requirements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, compliance doesn\u2019t just stop there.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Role of Proper Assembly<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Selecting the appropriate UN certified packaging is only part of the compliance process; correct assembly is equally vital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8402 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/plywood-assembly-image-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/plywood-assembly-image-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/plywood-assembly-image-768x801.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/plywood-assembly-image.jpg 880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let\u2019s assume the correct packaging has been selected for the dangerous goods, but the question \u2018is it being used correctly?\u2019 can\u2019t be ignored. And the answer, \u2018this is what we\u2019ve always done and it&#8217;s been ok\u2019, just isn\u2019t good enough.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using UN certified packaging is only effective if it is assembled correctly. Packaging components are tested as a system, meaning that incorrect assembly of the packaging and its contents can compromise the capability of the packaging performance and render the UN certification meaningless, in turn putting people, animals and the environment in potential danger if an incident should occur. Just because it hasn\u2019t happened yet, doesn\u2019t mean it won\u2019t!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The shipper must assemble the packaging as per the manufacturer\u2019s instructions for the packaging to perform to its capability. If incorrectly assembled, the shipper risks invalidating the UN test certificate and could compromise the capability of the packaging.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Common mistakes include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Substituting Inner Packaging<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Some UN certified combination packaging (e.g. 4G boxes) are tested with specific inner containers. Using different inner packaging types than those stated on the test certificate can lead to non-compliance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inadequate Cushioning or Absorbents<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Failing to use the specified type and amount of cushioning or absorbent materials stated on the test certificate can reduce the package&#8217;s ability to protect its contents during transit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Removing Buffers or Partitions:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Removing buffers and partitions to accommodate customer\u2019s own inners, eliminates the support and the protection these buffers provide and will compromise the integrity of the package and its capability to protect the inners.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8603 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/U-Taped-bottom-of-box-Fig-3.png.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"185\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Using Unauthorised Closures:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> UN certified packaging has specific closure instructions. Substituting tapes, or seals with alternatives that seem secure can compromise the integrity of the package.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Overfilling or Underfilling Containers:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Each UN certified package has a maximum gross mass in kilograms of the entire package weight, i.e. the \u2018<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">16<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 in the UN Mark 4G\/X<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">16<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\/S\/25\/GB\/5001\u202frefers to the maximum gross mass in kilograms of the entire package (including inners, substances and other accessories like cushioning materials). Whilst the UN Mark\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on \u201cV\u201d variants also states the maximum gross mass in kilograms, the gross mass of inner packaging should not exceed one-half of the gross mass of inner packaging used for the drop test. Users must refer to the test certificate for weight allowances of inners for 4GV\/4DV packaging.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ignoring Torque Specifications<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 Many UN certified containers require precise torque levels on caps and closures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Consequences of Cutting Corners<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, the belief that \u201cnothing bad has happened yet\u201d is dangerous. Inadequate packaging and poor assembly can result in:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transport delays or shipment rejections due to non-compliance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Legal penalties and fines for failing to meet safety regulations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reputational damage to businesses that fail to follow proper procedures.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Injuries to staff or members of the public from exposure to hazardous substances.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Environmental contamination due to breakages, leaks or spills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A Call to Action: Do It Right, Every Time<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instead of relying on luck, industry professionals should commit to using UN certified packaging and following proper assembly procedures. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airseadg.com\/en-us\/hatmat-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Training employees<\/a>, conducting routine checks, and ensuring compliance with regulations can prevent disasters before they happen.
